On the first day of Freshmen orientation we were notified that we would have to take at least two global learning classes in order to graduate. Little did I know that I would be taking much more than just two throughout my time at the institution. In my courses, I remember feeling uneasy about choosing a major and these global learning courses led me to choosing a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology when it was time to choose. The Office of Global Learning catalyzed my leadership growth at Florida International University and beyond. I remember walking into Primera Casa feeling lost about how to get involved and the Program Manager, Yenisleidy Simon-Mengana helped me find my place and get connected to offices, fellowship, and leadership opportunities. Through her mentorship I was able to apply and be accepted to the 2019 FIU inaugural cohort for the Millennium Fellowship, a summer internship at the OSJI FIU Women’s Center which became a part-time job, and an advisory board role on the Panther Community Action Board where I am now a Board Director. The Office of Global Learning Initiatives has opened up my horizons in the classroom and taught be a true global citizen of the planet. I've been encouraged to consider how one social issue affects a myriad of people within and across borders. Additionally, Global Learning supported me through opportunities that developed my global awareness and global engagement. Global Learning and the people in this office have mentored me to become the empathetic leader I am today!
